- Description
-
Beak-spouted ewer, with rounded carination at the center of the body. The shoulder tapers to a sharply outlined neck and the rim flares outward, creating a wide, round mouth. It is made of a thick, gray-brown earthenware, burnished and fired black in a reducing atmosphere. On the shoulder there is a deep incised decoration, consisting of nine closely spaced lines in a zig-zag pattern. There are also three horizontal, closely spaced incised lines on the beak spout, which connects the body of the vessel to the spout itself, as well as two concentric circle "eyes" on both sides of the spout. There is also incised decoration on the bridge between the spout and the mouth, as well.
Stephen P. Koob writes, "Complete vessel, with one break across the beaked spout which has been repaired and poorly filled with an unsightly gray-green putty. Scattered wear across the surface, with numerous fine scratches, abrasions and minor losses. Small chips are missing from the edges of the rim and spout. Two spalls or losses of surface can be seen on one side of the lower body. Scattered dirt/deposits, especially in recessed areas and on the interior.
The vessel is slightly irregular in shape and "leans" to one side. One side of the base appears to have been scraped in an attempt to compensate and make the vessel sit straighter. Overall condition is very good, but the repair to the spout should be redone." April 9, 1998.
