A-17: “Painting – calligraphy; Haiga by Issa” was sent by Harry Nail and arrived at the Freer March 21, 1972. Harry C. Nail, Jr. was a lawyer and a collector and dealer of Asian art. Born in New York City, Harry and his wife Janice McKinney Nail (1909-1985) would relocate from Chicago to the San Francisco area, where Harry worked in municipal law, and by 1950 he was an attorney for Santa Clara County. By at least 1958 Nail was identified as a dealer of Asian art, including Japanese prints, and the Freer Gallery of Art is among the museums and institutions which acquired objects from Nail.[2] See object file for copy of Harry Nail invoice to the Freer Gallery of Art, dated May 1, 1974, and approved by the Secretary of the Smithsonian on January 22, 1973.Research updated October 13, 2023 -
