Charles Lang Freer bought this drawing directly from Whistler in November 1894. At the same time he also purchased A Violet Note (see F1984.26), a watercolor of a female nude, and Harmony in Blue and Gold: The Little Blue Girl. On no other occasion did Whistler ever sell such an important and comprehensive selection of his nudes.
