In the 1733 English translation of Picart’s Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses (1723), the engraver Claude du Bosc copied the print “Diverses Pagodes et Penitences des Faquirs.” The engraving’s composition was flipped in the copying and printing process. Otherwise, du Bosc made only one significant, and censorial, change: removing the woman kissing the fakir. Here, on the far left, the fakir stands alone in a stance of devotion.
