The artist stated of this work: "Iron glaze results when iron oxide and other metallic pigments are added to a calcium glaze. In the past such glaze was called temmoku in Japan. Since the effects of firing can produce endless variations in the final appearance, iron glaze has long been a focus of fascination. I used Kutani porcelain clay and threw a simple, relaxed shape on the wheel. The glazed piece was fired in reduction (with limited oxygen) in a gas kiln. During my thirty-five-year career, I have aimed to produce sharp, simple pieces that are energized by a contemporary feeling." -
