Object Details

  • Artist

    Tokuda Yasokichi (Japan, 1933-2009)
  • Label

Working with the deep-toned enamel colors long associated with Kutani ware, Tokuda Yasokichi creates abstract rather than pictorial imagery. The artist fashioned a polished porcelain surface to give texture to the enamels. He applied the enamels in precise bands. When he fired the bowl, however, the enamels melted and ran toward the center, combining to form new colors and patterns. Like many artists, Tokuda gives individual names to his works.
