Description
The stand consists of a bowl with squared, deep center and everted rim resting on a narrow column, which in turn rests on a broad base. The drama of this object, belying its size, comes from the potter's articulation of the thrown clay forms, creating an undulating profile; the contrast between the narrow column and the expanding base and bowl of equal wide diameter; the punched and punctuated decoration of the column; and the deep soft gray color of the clay surface. The base extends in a gradual slope in three tiers. The column contracts slightly at midpoint. It is divided into three sections by horizontal paired bands of "dotted" lines (possibly impressed by a rouletting tool). Each section is pierced by four half-circle openings evenly spaced around the column. Like the capital on a classical column, a wider, squared form with short rows of punched dots staggered above and below two thrown ridges, separates the column from the bowl above it. Physically this element is actually the bottom of the bowl above. Mirroring the stepped expansion of the base, the bowl's everted rim bears concentric grooves imprinted by the potter's fingers. -
