Description
Bowl with compressed thin slightly flaring rim; flat, slightly concave base, 5 spur marks inside center.Clay: fine grain, buff stoneware. Glaze: thin, yellowish green celadon with crackle. Decoration: none. -

The object was transferred from Mayuyama & Co., Ltd. to the Freer Gallery of Art for acquisition consideration on March 10, 1967.Mayuyama & Co., Ltd. (established 1916) in Tokyo, Japan specializes in Far Eastern art. Mayuyama Matsutarō (1882-1935) began Mayuyama & Co. in Beijing, China during April 1905, where he specialized in the sale of Chinese antiquities. In 1916, Mayuyama relocated to Tokyo, Japan, opening a store in the Ginza district and later in Kyobashi. In Japan, the store featured Japanese works of art. After Mayuyama's death, his eldest son, Junkichi (1913-1999) inherited the business.[3] See object file for copy of Mayuyama & Co., Ltd. invoice, to Freer Gallery of Art, dated May 13, 1968, and marked approved on May 31, 1967.
