Bali’s local religion is a fusion of Hindu and Buddhist traditions. The sacred architecture reflects this unique blend. On a hilltop overlooking Tirta Empul, presently Bali’s most popular bathing place, Pura Pegulingan appears to be a Balinese courtyard-style Hindu temple—but it centers on a large Buddhist stupa. Ranging in size from monumental to handheld, stupas are reliquary mounds containing sacred objects associated with Buddhism. Pura Pegulingan’s bold and imposing structure contains a second, miniature stupa, which was discovered during excavations in the late 1980s.
